Photographers vs. Photo Editors
Before digital photography there was film. Because film was expensive and less convenient there were fewer photographers. Now, you can’t turn the corner without someone saying they are a photographer.
But I often wonder if there is actually more photographers now-a-days or just more photo editors. In today’s world it is so easy to edit or “enhance” photos to look gorgeous. It is simple to alter the cropping and the composition of shots thanks to the many photo processing programs. It is also easy enough to create a photograph by combining elements from many different photographs.
So where is the line between a good photographer vs a good photo editor? I don’t even know what to consider myself. Although I make money for the pictures I have taken, I do not know if I am any better at clicking the shutter than the person next to me using the camera on automatic because in reality I run all of my photos through Lightroom and tweak them to how I want them to look.
I’ve posted three pictures. They are all the same and not shot by me but they are of me. I have used them to show what can be done/what I do to edit photos. The first is completely unedited and the other two have been slightly manipulated and a preset has been applied.
What do you think? Do you think we have a surplus of photographers or photo editors? What do you consider yourself?
